Wheelworld To the Stars Trilogy Book 2 eBook Harry Harrison
I loved this. Harry Harrison is a favourite from way back. He is one of the icons of SciFi, and this book will demonstrate why. It's technically the second in a series of three, but it can be read as a solo. I'm a big fan of the 'road trip' style of story, and this certainly hit the spot. There's the alien world, the awkward cultural problems, and the tension of the dangerous journey... all written well, in Harrison's usual easy-to-digest manner.
This book deserves to be much better known. It may not be considered one of the great masterworks of sci-fi, but it's definitely engaging and absorbing.

Wheelworld To the Stars Trilogy Book 2 eBook Harry Harrison Reviews
Jan Kulozik, having been caught working for the resistance in the previous book, has been given scentence of exile on a remote planet who's unusual conditions make it an ideal place for farming, with a once every four years upheavel as the inhabitant workers must move to the opposite pole of the planet or die from extreme heat.
It's been over twelve years and it's time for the migration, however, the spaceships which come every season change before they must move haven't come, forcing them to take thier crops with them and make the perilous journey through the planets' summer zone with tempratures over two hundred degrees, and other dangers associated with the trip in the form of the road connecting the polar continents which is starting to wear down after several hundred years.
This book contains little of the plot of the previous book, and could be read independantly, however the third book in the trillogy does play back into the first book.
An exciting novel, containing politics of the small planetary population and revoloution.
This is the second book in Harrison's "To the Stars" trilogy. Jan Kuozik has been banished to a hellish world where the people live in the winter section of the planet because the rest is too hot to survive. The planet has a "year" that spans several of Earth's and they have to migrate to the other pole through the perpetually hot section of the world. The people are controlled by the heads of the major "families" who have total power over them. They're there to raise a hybrid corn to feed the rest of Earth's empire of planets. But this year, the ships didn't come when the harvest was in.
Jan, one of the few who has enough technical know-how to keep the machines running, has to cajole them into doing things "differently" to save the crop and their lives and in doing so, he drags them out of their rut and makes powerful enemies of the family heads. It could cost him his life.
It's an "epic journey" story filled with problems and drama. Worth a read.
An okay read from my youth, Wheel-world deals with a man who's picked up by one of the few "free nations" left in the world, learns about the difference between the privileged and the "proles", and gets unwillingly involved in a revolutionary plot to alter society.
It's not a very memorable read, and from what I recall didn't read very well. The most obvious aspect, strangely enough, are the Star Wars weapon artifacts on the first two covers; presumably the main character has a "storm trooper" rifle / blaster on the first cover, holds Han Solo's blaster on the second while sporting Luke Skywalker's light saber on his hip, and, for some mysterious reason (in the series I bought at least) the third cover seems to skew away from the Star Wars' weapon theme.
Personally I found the second book in the series to be the most interesting read because it read like an actual science fiction adventure, and not some concocted political adventure with scifi trappings. With some scifi I felt a good sense of satisfaction of having read a good solid tale, but this one seemed rather cliche at times, and in spite of the spy and sexual themes, predictable. Not one of Harrison's best efforts, but it passed the time.
An okay read.
Middle book of a series. Classic Harrison.
Of the 3 books in the series, I liked this one the best. The first introduces you to Jan Kulozik, a 'person of interest' to the state after he uncovers a conspiracy, this book descibes his life on the planet he was banished to.
Part 2 our hero is consigned to a planet where the people must move every few years to avoid the scorching sun...as they slave to supply the needs of the galaxy.
a classic novel, hard to find colonizing planets subject, 1 of 3 books in series
